A groundhog [also known as a woodchuck, _Marmota monax_] that bit a human in Leonardtown [Maryland] tested positive for rabies, the St. Mary’s County Health Department reported Tuesday afternoon [9 Aug 2016].
The incident occurred the evening of Saturday, 30 Jul 2016, at Fairwood Court in Leonardtown, off Route 5 south of the St. Mary’s County Fairgrounds.
The groundhog is the 11th animal from St. Mary’s County this year [2016] confirmed through laboratory testing to have rabies. Six
