Before vaccines were available, the disease struck 3 million to 4 million Americans a year, hospitalizing 48 000 and killing 500. Vaccination of the population protects those individuals who received the vaccine as well as those who are unable to be vaccinated because of compromised health conditions, such as those with immunocompromised immune systems, as well as babies who have not yet been vaccinated. To protect such individuals, the population needs to achieve at least 92 per cent immunity
