Melioidosis — Australia
A 2nd person has died in the Northern Territory after contracting a tropical disease that thrives in monsoonal conditions. Melioidosis, which is caused by a bacterium that lies dormant in the soil for most of the year but surfaces during heavy rain, has been contracted by 28 people so far this wet season [2017]. It can lead to severe pneumonia and blood poisoning and has a mortality rate of up to 15 percent.
