Retired fire chief Steve Pearson spent 30 years at the North Park Fire Protection District in Machesney Park, Ill., near where a Canadian National ethanol train derailed and exploded in Cherry Valley five years ago, killing one and injuring nine others. The incident highlighted the heavy demands placed on emergency responders who are often the first to arrive at crude oil and ethanol train derailments.
