No injuries reported in Halifax waterfront acid spill

A small chemical spill had the Halifax waterfront teeming with firefighters, hazmat workers and gawking tourists Friday morning.

The accident happened when a shipment was brought into the Nova Scotian Crystal building at around 10:30 a.m.

“One of the drums that contains hydrofluoric acid was slightly punctured,” said Larissa Law, a spokeswoman for the company.

The drum slipped off a dolly, Law said. The chemical is used to polish crystal, and workers wear protective gear when they use it because it can burn the skin.
