Melioidosis — Australia
A soil and water-borne disease has killed 2 people and forced 4 others into hospital intensive care this year [2021] in far north Queensland, as cases nearly double since 2020. There have been 17 cases of melioidosis, which is typically found in muddy waters, across the Cairns and Hinterland region since 1 Jan 2021.
Melioidosis is a potentially fatal bacterial disease found in contaminated water and soil, with outbreaks documented following extreme weather events.
