A large outbreak of gastroenteritis caused by Shiga toxin-producing _Escherichia coli_ (STEC) occurred in Germany in 2011 [1-3]. It was caused by a rare serotype O104:H4, positive for a Shiga toxin 2 gene (stx2), negative for stx1 and intimin (eae), [some characteristics of an enteroaggregative pathotype – Mod.LL] and a carrier of the extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) antibiotic resistance trait [4-6].
